Blog #2

In The Huffington Post, John Ward posts an article about Tom Coburn, The Most Frustrated Man In Washington, Updated on August 18, 10:17am. Tom Coburn, a Congressman has stated that our leader, Barrack Obama is not doing his job too well. Coburn mentions that Obama for the last year and a half has been running the reelections and not running the country. Coburn’s main interest is in the National Debt which is nearly sixteen trillion dollars; Coburn always is trying to do something for the Nation and complains that no one seems to care about it. He believes that the presidential term should be six years in order for them to work on the Nation other than working on achieving reelected. One thing we lack in his opinion as a nation is, Leadership. “What we have on both sides of the aisle are groups of people who refuse to make the hard choices. And in that case the country suffers.” With that Coburn makes an excellent point, the goal is out there and no one is willing to run after it.

  1. This "Frustrated Congressman" has a well thought out point. The presidents spend more time worrying about elections rather than working for the nation's interests, with all of their campaigns and fundraisers. Changing the presidential term from four to six years would be a little difficult although, that also posses as a valid idea.

  2. Although the the "Frustrated Congressman" presents his ideas about how our nation should be functioning, I disagree with his opinion. The way I see it, President Obama has accomplished many goals that have improved our nation over the course of his presidency. His leadership skills were the backbone to the capturing of Osama Bin Laden, an immaculate threat to our nation, and also to the new healthcare plan that he proposed. I believe President Obama does not fall in the category of having his goals set on reelection rather than the improvement of the nation, because if he did, his term as president would not have gone as successfully as it has. My opinion regarding the six year presidency rather than four, is that it would not work out because citizens change their minds based on how the nation is presently functioning, and there are times when a fresh breath of air is needed to change how situations were occurring before.

  3. There is a certain amount of truth to Coburn's statements. However, he, and countless Americans, fail to realize that the president is nothing more than a puppet, being controlled by others in the back such as the senate and congress. The president simply passes on whatever information they want public to believe. What this nation truly needs is one able to rule with an iron fist. One who will not allow themselves to be puppetered by others and who will stand by their word. Most would assume that I suggest a dictator to come forth, and I do not entirely deny it. For a certain amount of time, this country needs a person like that so that it may begin to regrow and repair. If you need an example of an empire blossoming under the rule of a strict ruler, take a look at China.

  5. This post was well written briefly without boring me as the reader. I actually understood what the Congressman was trying to say in, “What we have on both sides of the aisle are groups of people who refuse to make the hard choices. And in that case the country suffers.”He is referring to the old-school persona of the corruption from a two party government, as George Washington argued. It is true that having just a Republican government, or just a Democratic government, people would not worry about re-election because the next to be inaugurated will be of the same party, thus sharing the same ideas and trying to achieve the same goals. I completely agree with the congressman and do not think he is frustrated because of the way the government is, but because almost no one listens to him. It does not matter which party rules, but at this point both parties are too caught up in their social, political, and geopolitical agendas to try to better our nation's economy. When President Bush took office, the national debt was at 5 trillion dollars, but after his eight year term, it increased to 10.6 trillion. On the other hand, while the current president Barrack Obama nears the end of his term he has raised the national debt to a staggering 16 trillion in only four years. Both presidents have a fair share of the blame, but today, both parties are straying away from The United States's classic, "Don't get involved" policy. As American citizens and patriots, we must all come to a mutual agreement to improve the economy and lower the national debt. After all, our government is a democracy, which means the only people who can solve our problems, are the American people.

  6. The author is correct that presidents usually worry about reelection when they get into office, and worry less about working on the nation. But extending the term for each presidential time in office can be harmful for the balance between both parties, because if a republican or a democrat have 6 years and get reelected, then that gives them 12 years in office, and gives the other party no time to work and do major changes for 12 years. But at the same time, if you condemn presidents for not getting much done in office, it is not only them to blame. Congress has a role in this too, because it is not solely their decision to get bills passed. So in a way, i disagree with this man because he does not see what presidents try to do in office, but are constantly rejected on their claims.

  7. Congressman, Tom Coburn, has a reason to be frustrated. Our economy did not improve, and as a president, Barack Obama should be more concerned with the infrastructure of our nation than to travel to the states and campaign for reelection. President Barack Obama promised hope and change to the citizens, and unfortunately, there has not been such a drastic change in his term. A four year term is enough time to see the work one has performed in office, and a six year presidency for the first term is just too long.

  8. The congressman has every right to be frustrated with the way the country has been run. I believe Barack OBama could have done more for the country if he spent less time focussing on getting realected. If the President puts in all his time and effort into improving the country he would havbe succeeded. I have to say i disagree with the congressman about the number of years one should remain president before the next election. Four years should be enough time to make improvements if one is dedicated. This was a well put, interesting and brief summary of the article.

  9. Knowing you, Gevo, I would expect a topic like this from you. I agree with you and this man. Tom Coburn does have a right to be frustrated and he seems to justify his reasons accordingly. If this nation had more people like Coburn, then for sure we would be an advancing and improving nation.

  10. Gev - I think that it is a good article for you to post about. I actually agree with the idea that the presidential term should be six years. I think that they spend too much time campaigning as president the last two years in office that, like the Congressman suggested, they do not get to actually focus on helping the country.

  11. I absolutely agree with Coburn that the presidential term should be six years because that way a president can have more time to work for the nation. I think the shortage of time strongly effects the way a president rules. Obama has been concentrating on campaigning for reelection but that is because he has a short amount of time left. Even though changing a presidential term to six years will be difficult, it will improve the nation and encourage rulers to work on the country enthusiastically, without worrying for reelections too soon. Obama's term is near its end, and the nation's debt has increased to sixteen trillion, which is appalling. It is unfortunate that the nation suffers because no party makes the hardest decisions. As citizens, it is our job to lower the debt because we live on this land. The congressman has proven a great point, but unfortunately, people do not listen and lack effort in helping their own nation.
